Trotting for Pike

A float trotting rig for Pike is relatively simple, it is made up of a stop knot, bead, float, weight, and wire trace.

The most important thing is getting the depth right, always start shallow and adjust the stop knot until the bait is just running over the bottom and snags and doesn't drag.

The best approach is to run the bait through the swim at the same speed as the current. Do this a number of times, if this does not induce any takes then hold the float back. This causes the bait to rise to the surface and when you allow more line out the bait will then slowly sink back to the bottom. If you do this repeatedly it will tease the Pike into striking.

Your main line should be a floating line as this makes life easier as it minimizes drag and tangling, ideally a 30lb braid main line, but mono can be used

When starting out is first go with someone who is an experienced Pike angler. Despite there fierce appearance and reputation Pike are easily damaged and killed. So either go with a friend or family member who is experienced, somebody like myself or get in touch with the PAC (Pike Anglers Club…www.pacgb.co.uk) who can put you in touch with your local branch
