Keeping Maggots Fresh
Always try and get the freshest maggots you can in the first place When you go to your local tackle shop check to see how large the dark feed spot is, as this is an indication as to how long the maggots have been taken off the feed. Fresh bait is in general large and plum and will feel soft to the touch.
As soon as you can riddle your maggots to remove any dead ones band any skins. Place the remaining maggots in a clean bait box with clean maize, bran flakes (from a heath food shop) or sawdust. Please be aware that using sawdust may cause the skins to toughen up.
The best place to store the maggots after doing the above is cool, dry place such as the floor of a garage or shed. Even is better is a dedicated bait fridge, Please, please tell your wife, partner, Mum or Dad that you intend to keep them in the family fridge before you do so…
As long as you follow these guidelines then you should be able to keep your maggots in top condition for about a week in winter and between 2-3 days in summer
